Research Assistant Professor
Ph.D. - 2005
Earth & Atmospheric Sciences/Georgia Institute of Technology
Dr. Elston’s teaching responsibilities include Computers in
Civil Engineering and Hydraulics at the undergraduate level; and
an advanced undergraduate/graduate level special topics course
on Mixing and Transport in the Coastal Environment. Building on
her interdisciplinary training as a meteorologist and a physical
oceanographer, her research focuses on understanding the
mechanisms and physical processes that govern mixing,
circulation, and dynamics in the atmosphere and the coastal
ocean over a wide variety of temporal and spatial scales. Areas
of special interest include, lateral mixing processes in natural
and constructed environments, tidal dynamics, boundary-layer
dynamics, turbulence, air-sea interaction(s), estuarine physics,
and coastal oceanography. She joined the Civil & Environmental
Engineering department in January of 2008 after a joint
postdoctoral appointment at UMaine between the School of Marine
Sciences and the Department of Spatial Information Science &
Engineering.
