2006 - The Arrrgregate!
2006 was the most successful year in recent history for the UMaine canoe team.  With a pirate-themed boat adorned with a skull-and-crossed-paddle design cast directly into the canoe, UMaine captured 1st place at the New England Regional Competition, beating out regional powerhouses WIT and URI.  The team traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the National Concrete Canoe Competition.  The UMaine team placed 18th at this event.  Check out the PRESS section of our website for articles featuring the 2006 canoe team.

2005 - Cement Mixer (Mainely Concrete)
The 2005 Concrete Canoe Team had a very successful year, winning the racing category and coming in 4th overall at the New England Regional Competition at the University of Connecticut.  The team's theme was "Mainely Concrete," and the name of the canoe was Cement Mixer.  The pictures below show students building the wood frame and foam mold for the canoe and hanging out at the competition.  (Click the pictures to view full-size images.)

2004 - The Deadline
The Deadline team, who's name was inspired by Donald Trump's television show, The Apprentice, placed 4th at the New England competition.

1998 - The Wet Zeppelin
The University of Vermont hosted the competition in 1998.  The competition was a lot of fun, but it got really wavy out on the lake.  UMaine finished 4th.

1997 - Rock Hard
Aptly named ROCK HARD, this concrete canoe was designed and built to take part in the annual competition. The University of Maine team traveled to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, where it placed 2nd overall in New England.

1996
With assistance from 16 Maine companies and Scott Phillips, of Old Town Canoe, a team of University of Maine Civil Engineering students took 3rd place out of fifteen entrants in the annual concrete canoe races in Connecticut in April.  The team of 22 students put in more then 700 hours building the 170 lb. boat. Races were held over two courses, one 200 meters long the other 600 meters long. Four boats sank during the event, but the Maine entry remained afloat.
