Direct Shear: Soil Mechanics Laboratory

General
background information

Granular soil is tested in shear to determine load carrying capacity.    Several tests, that in total take two lab periods, consist of changing normal loads and specimen densities.

Each lab group will write complete procedures and run three successful trials on ONE of the following.  [ assignment memo ]

  1. ASTM graded Ottawa sand, compacted loosely
  2. ASTM graded Ottawa sand, compacted densely
  3. Q-ROK compacted loosely
  4. Q-ROK compacted densely

Lab groups will then post their complete test results (excel file) to the CIE 365 firstclass folder, to enable comparison of the different materials and relative densites.

Then, each writing group will write a "laboratory report" (number 3) with the complete procedure attached as an appendix.  Note that the model report is on the same test topic, but doesn't cover the same question or complete procedures.
