!! This lab course is largely about breaking things, so safety is the highest priority!   If at any time you see an unsafe situation, do not hesitate to get yourself and others out of there.

Safety Glasses are REQUIRED

Safety glasses are required at all times while equipment is turned on.  Not only are safety glasses a good precaution, they prepare students for industry where they are also required.

Use your legs when lifting

Use caution when lifting heavy objects.  Lift with your legs, not your back.   Ask for help or avoid heavy lifting if you have back problems.

If you are allergic to dusts, cement or any other materials encountered in labs, ask for a dust mask and/or please see an instructor to make alternative arrangements.

Very few chemicals are used in this lab, but MSDS's (Material Safety Data Sheets) are available on the safety board in the basement of Boardman Hall for everything.

Be personally prepared before arriving in the lab:

  • Long hair must be tied back so that it will not become entangled in moving equipment.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry that may also become tangled in equipment.
  • Avoid sandals and wear shoes with closed toes.  Most labs don't justify steel toe boots, but they are great particularly for concrete handling.
  • For the "Concrete Mix Pour" lab, long pants are required.  Old clothes and shoes you don't mind getting wet and dirty are a good idea.
