Dial Calipers are used to accurately measure sizes up to 6 inches.
The smallest increment of measurement is one thousandth of an inch (0.001).
Precision is listed as +/- 0.0005 inches.

How to read:

  • Start by verifying zero with the jaws closed.
  • Loosen the zero lock and adjust the dial to zero, then re-tighten.

  • Carefully open and close the jaws around the specimen.
  • The typical method is to roll your thumb as shown.

  • Read it!
  • Start by reading tenths of inches off the scale (0.8).  It's between 0.8 and 0.9 in this case.
  • Next, read the red arrow on the dial.  One revolution of the dial = one tenth of an inch (0.1), so a dial reading of 67 = 0.067.
  • Thus, the answer here is 0.867.
