Banks
B.S. - University of Maine, 1906
Frank Banks
worked for the Bureau of Reclamation for 44 years, where he
created the Grand Coulee Dam, the largest dam ever built. He is
also credited with building six other dams. After retirement, he
served as an advisor on several projects around the world,
primarily in India. Banks received the Gold Medal for
Distinguished Service in 1950.

degree)
John Bridge serves as a consultant to Bridgecorp, a
century-old, family road-building business until sold in 2004 to
Pike Industries. For four years in the 1980's, Bridge was a
national officer of Associated Builders & Contractors, a merit
shop organization of 20,000 construction firms. In 1999, Bridge
received the Maine Transportation Achievement Award. He also
received the 2003 Major Achievements in Construction Award from
ACM. In 2005, Bridge was honored as Maine's “Philanthropist of
the Year” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He
served as mayor of the capital city of Augusta, Maine in
1997-1998. The tennis complex at UMaine is named for his father.
Bridge has also endowed a professorship at the University and has
hired several UMaine engineering graduates over the years. In the
Fall of 2003, Bridge was inducted into the Francis Crowe Society
as a Distinguished Engineer Member.

Stephen W.
Cole

Stephen Cole
founded S.W. Cole Engineering, Inc. in 1979. This firm is now the
largest of its kind in Maine. Cole has served on the advisory
board for the University of Maine Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering. He has also served as
president or chair of the Maine Section of ASCE, the Maine Chapter
of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Consulting
Engineers of Maine, and the Maine Concrete Technicians
Certifications Board.

Francis Crowe
B.S. - University of Maine, 1905
Francis Crowe
built more dams than any man in history, with a final count of
19. Crowe's most notable accomplishment was the Hoover Dam, the
highest concrete arch dam in the United States, and the largest
dam in the world at the time of its completion. This dam was
expected to take seven years of construction, but Crowe finished
the project in only five years.

Albert Curran
is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Woodard & Curran,
a large environmental consulting firm with 500 employees in ten
locations. Curran has also served as the president of Consulting
Engineers of Maine.

Edward Delano B.S. - University
of Maine, 1902
Delano designed and oversaw the
building of the first cloverleaf interchange build in the United
States in 1929. It was built in Woodbridge, New Jersey, and it
allowed Route 25 to cross over Route 4 (now Routes 1 and 35,
respectively). Delano was a partner in the old Pennsylvania
contracting firm carrying his name: Rudolph & Delano. He was
also responsible for the "center line" on the highway. His
intentions were not to control the traffic, but the cracking of
the concrete, but the seam in the middle of the road quickly was
used to divide the road into lanes.
Robert
Desjardins

After
graduating with a B.S. in Civil Engineering at the age of 20 and
holding a few other jobs, Robert Desjardins began working at
Cianbro Corportation in 1967. He became Vice President of
Engineering in 1979 and he became Senior Vice President in 1982.
Robert then continued on to become the Executive Vice President of
Cianbro. He held the position of president of Maine AGC in 1991,
and then became the president of National Associated General
Contractors of America (AGC) in 2001.

Richard D.
Fox

J.D. - Suffolk Law School
Richard Fox is
the president of Camp Dresser & McKee, a large Cambridge, MA firm
specializing in global consulting, engineering, construction and
operation. He received 2003 John I. Parcel - Leif J. Sverdrup
Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers and was also
the recipient of The University of Maine's Francis Crowe Society
Award.

Leonard Freeman

George Freeman
served as the chief engineer of the construction of the base of
the San Francisco Bay Bridge. He was also the chief engineer for
The Foundation Company of New York and later for his own company,
Moran, Proctor, Freeman, and Mueser.

George Greenwood taught Highway Engineering, Traffic
Engineering, and Transportation and Construction Management in the
Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Maine,
beginning in the Fall of 1963 as an Associate Professor. He
received the 1991 Ashley S. Campbell Award from the College of
Engineering for outstanding teaching and public service
contributions. Dr. Greenwood retired on January 1, 1994.
Charles A.
Morse

Charles Morse
served as Division Engineer of the Mexican Central Railway, as
well as Chief Engineer of entire Santa Fe Railway System. Morse
is also credited with the making of the Chicago Rock Island and
Pacific Railroad and served as president of this railway.
Shawn S.
Small
B.S. - University of Maine, 1970
Shawn Small is the co-founder and
Executive Vice President of CES, Inc., located in Brewer, Maine
and founded in 1978. He served as Project Engineer and Project
Manager in the Engineering Department of the James W. Sewall
Company in Old Town, Maine from 1970-1980. Small was a U.S. Army
Combat Engineer, receiving an Honorable Discharge at Rank of
Captain.
