Civil Engineering/University of Wisconsin-Madison
Professor Habib Joseph Dagher received his Ph.D. in
civil/structural engineering from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in 1985. He also holds two Master of Science
Degrees in structural engineering and in engineering mechanics. He
is Professor of Civil/Structural Engineering at the University of
Maine, Bath Iron Works Professor of Structural Engineering, and
Director of the
Advanced
Engineered Wood Composites Center. His research interests
include using composite materials for rebuilding and restoring the
nation's infrastructure.
Established through a National Science Foundation grant, The
AEWC Center is housed in an ISO 17025 accredited 48,000 sq ft
laboratory. The laboratory is a state-of-the-art “one stop
shop” for integrated composite materials research, development
and testing. The Center's laboratory provide capacities for the
development of composite materials and structures from the
conceptual stage through research, manufacturing prototypes, and
subsequent testing, evaluation and code approval. The
Center includes 46 researchers and support staff and sponsors 150
students every year, both graduates and undergraduates from over
20 academic departments..
Under Professor Dagher's leadership, the AEWC Center attracts
more than $8 million/year in external research funding from
agencies including the National Science Foundation, the Federal
Highway Administration, the Office of Naval Research, the United
States Department of Agriculture, the United States Coast Guard,
the Department of Defense, and the Maine Technology Institute. Additionally, AEWC works with
industrial clients on a contractual basis providing product
development and testing services.
Professor Dagher has received numerous awards for his teaching,
research and public service including the Distinguished Maine
Professor Award (1995), the UMaine Presidential Research and
Creative Achievement Award (2003) and the New England Higher
Education Excellence Award (2004). The AEWC Center has also
received several prestigious awards including the Governor's Award
for Accomplishments in Maine's Natural Resource-based Industries
(2003). In 2007, the American Composites Manufacturers Association
awarded the composites industry's two highest awards for
creativity and innovation to AEWC for ballistic panels developed
in its laboratories.
